The State Of The Orioles (pretty sad)

by GLS <orioles@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Feb 2, 2008 at 03:45 PM

Full article can be read here:
http://s****ts.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=s****tsxchange-teamre****ts-2008-mlb-bal&prov=s****tsxchange&type=team_re****t

Arrivals: RHP Roberto Novoa (waiver claim from Cubs), C Guillermo
Quiroz (free agent from Rangers), OF Luke Scott (trade with Astros),
LHP Troy Patton (trade with Astros), RHP Matt Albers (trade with
Astros), RHP Dennis Sarfate (trade with Astros), RHP Greg Aquino
(waiver claim from Brewers), OF Chris Roberson (contract purchased
from Phillies), RHP Lance Cormier (minor league free agent from
Braves).

Departure: SS Miguel Tejada (traded to Astros).

Free Agents: C Paul Bako, RHP Kris Benson, CF Corey Patterson.

The only free agent the Orioles might want for 2008 is Patterson.

Arbitration-eligible: LHP Erik Bedard, RHP Daniel Cabrera.

The Orioles have already talked about trying to close a deal to extend
Bedard's contract for perhaps three years before he comes up for
arbitration. Cabrera led the AL in losses, walks and earned runs
allowed.

In Limbo: OF Jay Gibbons hit .230 with six home runs in 84 games,
missed 40 games with a shoulder injury and was implicated in the HGH
scandal. Starting pitcher Daniel Cabrera didn't miss a start until
serving a suspension for letting his temper get the better of him, and
he led the league with 18 losses, 107 walks and 125 earned runs
allowed. Understandably, the club is wary of his lack of improvement.
OF Jay Payton and INF Aubrey Huff were major disappointments as free
agent signees and could be moved if they can bring much of anything in
return.

Medical Watch:

1B/DH Aubrey Huff (hernia surgery) is expected to be ready by the time
the exhibition games begin.

LHP Erik Bedard (strained left oblique) should be fully healed long
before spring training.

LHP Adam Loewen (left elbow surgery in June 2007) expects to be at
full strength for the start of spring training.

OF Jay Gibbons (left shoulder surgery in August 2007) hopes to be back
by spring training.

RHP Chris Ray (Tommy John surgery in August 2007) might miss all of
the 2008 season.

RHP Danys Baez (Tommy John surgery in September 2007) likely will miss
the entire 2008 season.

RHP Kris Benson (rotator cuff surgery in March 2007) missed the entire
2007 season but hopes to be back in 2008.
