Hitting Down on the Farm

by Gnork <gnork@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 15, 2008 at 08:38 PM

This list includes only hitters who have had some decent playing time
and are doing well, The 1st column will be the team. Underneath is the
player's name and after his name is his current ranking (if any) by
Sox Prospects.com. They list their top 60. Stat categories in order
are AB, 2b, 3b, HR, RBI, BB, K, BA, OBP and SLG. I will start at the
bottom with Greenville.Stats were as of yesterday's BB America
listings.

Greenville
Michael Jones (29) 139 11 1 3 24 14 31 .374 .432 .532
Anthony Rizzo (17) 83 6 0 0 11 3 15 .373 .402 .446
Aaron Reza (60) 51 7 0 3 11 4 9 .353 .441 .687
Josh Reddick (7) 53 4 2 0 9 5 8 .340 .397 .491
Che-Hsuan Lin (11) 150 9 1 3 17 20 27 .287 .389 .420

Comments: Jones and Rizzo are both 1st baseman. Jones was a low draft
choice 4 years ago. He hit very well last year also. Rizzo was a high
draft choice. His average is great, but so far no power and not much
plate discipline.

Reza was a low draft choice last year. He can play all over the
infield and he has already been promoted as has Reddick, who is rated
highly. Lin was an international signing from Taiwan.

Lancaster
Jorge Jimenez (45) 135 9 0 3 23 8 15 .348 .396 .481
Daniel Nava 65 5 0 3 12 7 16 .338 .405 .554
Aaron Reza (60) 51 4 2 1 5 2 10 .333 .414 .549
Reid Engel (16) 132 6 0 5 19 10 28 .318 .372 .477
Josh Reddick (7) 73 0 1 4 11 3 13 .315 .333 .507
Jon Still (19) 132 8 0 10 23 19 24 .303 .388 .591

Comments: Both Reza and Reddick have continued to do very well since
their promotions. Both need to work on plate discipline. Jimenez is an
American from the hot, dusty farm country of ****terville, CA. He plays
third base and was a 15th round selection in 2006 out of ****terville
JC. Nava was BBA's Independent Leagues top rated prospect after 2007.
He is doing very well in his 1st taste of affiliated pro ball. He
deserves more playing time. That time is going to 2 other outfielders,
both much younger and both failing miserably thus far. 2006 1st round
selection Jason Place hit a pathetic .214 .298 .359 for low A
Greenville last year. He played almost every day amassing 459 at bats
and 160Ks. For this he got promoted. So far, not so good. He is
hitting .195 .285 .336. Players should not get promoted regardless
of their draft status until they have demonstrated some success at
their current level. Place should go back to Greenville or maybe even
the NYP once it starts up. David Mailman has not been delivering. He
had only 22 at bats in the GCL last year in his 1st pro season.
Somehow they started this 7th round selection in high A ball this
year. He is hitting .205 .316 .282 and playing regularly. He
definitely should go to the NYP. Jon Still is the best power prospect
in the organization. Engel is having another good year.

****tland
Sandy Madera 38 3 0 3 5 3 4 .421 .463 .737
Zack Daeges (37) 61 4 1 0 3 21 4 .328 .494 .426
Sean Danielson 94 5 1 0 2 10 19 .309 .375 .383
Iggy Suarez 115 7 0 2 15 13 17 .296 .367 .409
Jeff Corsaletti (41) 88 8 2 3 13 19 18 .295 .427 .534
Mark Wagner (14) 87 5 0 2 14 11 16 .287 .376 .414

Comments: Madera is a 28 year old c-1b signed as a 6 year minor league
free agent. See Pawtucket for how he has kept on hitting after a
promotion. Zack Daeges has amazing stats. Last year he had 81 extra
base hits for Lancaster. So far this year the power is almost non-
existent, but he has reincarnated as Eddie Yost. His 21 walks with
only 61 at bats are amazing as is his OBP and his walk to K ratio of
21 to 4. Corsaletti is having his best year so far and may become a
backup outfielder in the majors at some point. Wagner is our catching
prospect.I'd like to see more power from him.

Pawtucket
Sandy Madera 52 4 0 3 9 9 10 .327 .419 .577
Jeff Bailey 125 7 0 9 28 14 24 .320 .399 .592
Jon Van Every 122 4 1 6 20 15 48 .287 .365 .484

Comments: If not convinced that Bailey could not be a valuable
handyman type like Craig Wilson or Ken Phelps in the majors if he gets
a chance. That probably won't happen with Boston. Van Every could put
up better numbers if he could make more contact. Madera is still
hitting.
