You're right, they did sign him to an extension. Here's the details after
a quick search:
"Arroyo, who turns 30 on Feb. 24, will make $3.8 million this season, as
stipulated in his old contract. Instead of making $3.95 in 2008, he will
get an additional $2.5 million bonus. The earnings increase to $9.5
million
in 2009 and $11 million in 2010 with an $11 million club option for 2011
that can climb to $13 million if he reaches incentives. The option carries
a $2 million buyout."
So, he's less of a bargain than I'd figured, but honestly I wouldn't say
that's untradeable. Like I said, Jake Westbrook is making $10 million
this
season and is the most similar to Arroyo. It's even more coincidental
that
around the same time last year Westbrook also signed an extension through
2010:
"Jake Westbrook signed a three-year, $33 million contract extension
through
2010 on Friday with the Cleveland Indians, who locked up a key starter
before possibly losing him as a free agent."
I even saw an article from a Cleveland s****ts columnist opining that
Westbrook signed for vastly less than he could have elsewhere just because
he likes it in Cleveland. If a guy like Westbrook is considered a
"bargain" at $33 million over 3 years then surely Arroyo's contract won't
be seen as ridiculous, especially considering we'll probably see more
insane signings this offseason. It seems Arroyo's contract is nothing
more
than status quo at this point. I don't think that's untradeable, the
situation would just have to be right. If some big-money team like the
Yanks, who already have a need for pitching, have a guy or two get injured
who's to say they wouldn't go for a guy like Arroyo? What's $10 million
to
the Yanks? I mean, they're already dumping $11 mil this year into Carl
Pavano!
