I thought Raines use was common knowledge since he had to testify to
his use during the  trial of his dealer. I think in 1985.   That's
where the quote I referred to in the beginning about sliding head
first came from. 

It was a big deal,  chronicled in TIME and was baseball's "shame" at
the time and was blamed for killing the s****t.   Big stink about
clubhouse dealers, and I think there were several other trials after
that as well.  

That trial  in Pittsburgh was particulalry explosive because it named
two of the best loved pirate heros, Madlock and Stargell, as sources
for "greenies".

In addition to Raines, I think Lonnie Smith, Dale Berra, and Dave
Parker were witnesses and customers, and the list included a boatload
of  others.   Seems to me a lot cardinals and pirates but that may
just be because I was closer to the

Raines hasn't made the HOF yet, but it sure didn't stop Paul Molitor,
another well known user and Fergie Jenkins.   I'm sure they aren't
alone.
