Let's see how Perkins does tonight; maybe some of these fringe
starters like Perkins, Slowey, and Hernandez will try to step up their
games another notch knowing that Liriano is knocking on their
doorstep.
However, I'm assuming that the Twins think that Livan Hernandez is a
good mentor for the young starters, and I assume they don't want to
move him out of the rotation, even though as of now he, at best,
alternates a few decent starts with a few starts of total shellacking.
At a minimum, the Twins should call up Liriano and for the time being,
have him pitch from the bullpen. Then, so to say, it'll be easier for
the Twins if they are concerned about how long it will take for him to
get used to major league hitting again, or getting overworked (not
sure how legit any of those possible concerns would be), but at least
then we could send down Brian Bass (I don't think he's quite as
intimidating to opposing batter, as say Joe Nathan), and our bullpen
is way better, if, for the time being until a starting position opens
up, Liriano can be a set-up guy who can pitch multiple innings if need
be.
