Bet you thought Rich Harden would be the first A's starter to get
hurt, huh?
Well, the A's did what they should do last night: they beat a mediocre
pitcher and won a game with superior pitching. It works for me.
Paul Byrd sucks; he didn't even strike out a single A's batter in his
start last night. That's part one of the good news. The second part is
the A's got hits and scored runs, and it came from the bottom part of
the order -- always a good thing.
But the bigger issue was the injury to Duchscherer. After pitching
five scoreless innings, he put the first two runners on in the sixth
inning and then left with a bicep strain. Overall, his six Ks and one
run allowed were just what the A's needed to stop the bleeding.
If he's hurt, that will suck. But why can't the A's players stay
healthy? That, again, is a larger issue that needs to be addressed by
the team's management.
By the way, it's good to see Crosby playing well early. It can only
help his confidence. And Kurt Suzuki will be a major league catcher
for a long time; he's going to be underrated for a few years more, but
the A's are lucky to have him.
A's Record: 2-3
A's Should-Be Record: 3-2
