Game 9: Nice job, boys!

Well, the A's took advantage of another team's weaknesses, as often
happens to them. And this is the kind of win good teams pull out every
so often -- this makes me believe the A's have a chance in 2008.

And hey, they're above .500 after nine games. Who knows if this will
be their high-water mark for the season, but it certainly is nice to
have a decent record after a few weeks.

The A's trailed by a run going into the ninth. Trailing 3-0 earlier,
they missed a great chance to take the lead in the fourth inning,
settling for two runs when they could have scored a lot more.

The game had developed into a bullpen battle, with that one-run edge
lasting from the fifth to the ninth inning.

And then Jeremy Accardo entered the game. The A's tied it when Mark
Ellis hit a triple, and the A's piled more runs on to secure the win.
Huston Street did his job two days in a row (but can he pitch a third
day? Stay tuned ...).

Bobby Crosby continued his good start, driving in three runs on the
day with two doubles. Only four players had hits for the A's in this
game, but they all seemed to count. Jack Cust struck out three times,
but he walked twice (a true TOP, eh?).

Somebody named Greg Smith started the game for the A's, and he did
what all no-names dream of doing: had a quality start and kept his
team in the game. Five walks in six innings isn't good, but only two
earned runs to go with five strikeouts helps.

Again, a good win that we'll all take with a smile. Perhaps one the
A's shouldn't have won, so it's good to get one of those back on the
right side of the ledger.

A's Record: 5-4
A's Should-Be Record: 6-3
