I doubt that was what the Padres had in mind for him when they signed
him...
It's not Towers' or Alderson's style to pay significant bucks for a
starter
and convert him into a reliever, especially on a 1-year deal. That's where
Towers had made a career on mining gold from the scrap heap, picking up
middle relievers others are throwing away (Linebrink, Meredith, Brocail)
that still have skill, and expect a couple of them to pan out.
Wolf was acquired with an eye towards the #4 or #5 starting slot.
The guy who's probably ticketed for the 7th inning setup candidate is
Carlos
Guevara, who they picked up from the Marlins.
