They were able to get him relatively cheaply ($3.5-$4M), partly because of
his injury, partly because of his baggage.
He did get along well with the other players in the clubhouse, so while
his
temper occasionally gets him in trouble, he wasn't a clubhouse "cancer"
here. The injury bug is the more likely issue.
He's good insurance for outfield depth, and if he's going to be ready when
the season starts, like his agent is indicating, it adds one hell of a
good
bat in the lineup.
Certainly worth the risk of how well he comes back from the injury.
