In his landmark book, "The Physics of Baseball", retired Harvard
Physics professor Robert K. Adair decsribes how much influence
altitude has on the flight of a baseball.
He mentions Denver, but also Atlanta, Georgia as examples of
cities where baseballs travel a significantly longer distance than
in low-lying areas.
Atlanta is just 900 feet above sea level. Phoenix is an average
1100 feet above. But that is enough to have a major impact.
Their elevation makes a real difference, not only because fly
balls go further, but because line drives can split the gaps more
frequently since the ball is traveling faster.
