Today in Padre History
April 1, 1997

Padres 12, Mets 5

Shortstop Chris Gomez, pinch hitter Rickey Henderson, and second baseman
Quilvio Veras hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to lead off an 11-run 6th

inning for the Padres. Right fielder Tony Gwynn goes 3 for 5 with 2 runs
and 2 RBI, while center fielder Steve Finley tacks on 3 RBI.

Starter Joey Hamilton (1-0)--for whom Henderson pinch hit--is the
beneficiary of the offensive outburst, getting the win after giving up 4
earned runs and 6 walks in 6 innings. Tim Scott and Doug Bochtler pitch
the
final 3 innings.

Left fielder Bernard Gilkey is the Mets' offensive star, going 2 for 5
with
2 RBI. Starter Pete Harnisch gets a no-decision, with reliever Yorkis
Perez
(0-1) getting the loss after giving up 2 earned runs in 1/3 inning.
