Today in Padre History - April 2, 1997

Padres 6, Mets 5 (12 innings)

The Padres score a run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to
extra 
innings, then score two runs in the bottom of the twelfth to overcome a 
one-run Mets lead to win, 6-5.

The Padres' offensive star is third baseman Ken Caminiti, who goes 2 for
5, 
with 1 home run, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI.  Shortstop Chris Gomez wins the

game by driving in second baseman Archi Cianfrocco with a single.  Gomez, 
right fielder Tony Gwynn, and first baseman Wally Joyner each have 2 hits
in 
the game.

Starter Andy Ashby goes 7 innings, giving up 4 runs, 3 walks, and 2 home 
runs.  Relievers Sterling Hitchcock, Dario Veras, Trevor Hoffman, Doug 
Bochtler, and Sean Bergman hold the Mets to 1 run over the final 5
innings, 
with Bergman (1-0) getting the win.

First baseman John Olerud is the Mets' offensive star, going 2 for 5 with
1 
home run, 1 run scored, and 3 RBI.  Starter Mark Clark pitches 6-1/3 
innings, giving up 3 runs.  Reliever Ricardo Jordan (0-1) takes the loss.
