Padres 8, Dodgers 4

In the 5th inning, first baseman Phil Nevin hits a grand slam and center 
fielder Jay Payton hits a two-run homer to lead the Padres past the
Dodgers, 
8-2.  Third baseman Sean Burroughs, second baseman Mark Loretta, and
pitcher 
Brian Lawrence each have 2 hits in the win.

Starter Lawrence (1-0) lasts 5 innings, giving up 1 earned run, 8 hits, 2 
walks, and striking out 3 to get the win  Five relievers (Ismael Valdez, 
Eddie Oropesa, Scott Linebrink, Antonio Osuna, and Jay Witasick) old the 
Dodgers to 1 run over the final 4 innings.

The Dodgers have 15 hits, led by catcher Paul LoDuca and right field Juan 
Encarnacion with 3 hits apiece.  The Dodgers leave 15 men on base. 
Starter 
Hideo Nomo (0-1) gives up 7 hits, 7 earned runs, and 2 home runs, while 
striking out only 1 Padre in 5 innings to take the loss.
