Actually, he didn't ignore pitch count.
It was because Peavy had pitched more efficiently than he normally does
that
he only had 101 pitches after 8 innings, and since they typically let him
go
110-115 without flinching, as well as he was pitching it made sense to
keep
him in. If he started struggling, or racked up 120+ pitches too quickly,
they would have gone to the bullpen. If Martinez had reached base, he'd
have
gotten the hook. The DP kept him within pitch count constraints.
He finished the game with 116 pitches... what he normally has after 7
innings.
