San Diego scores four runs in the bottom of the eighth to break a 4-4 tie
with Los Angeles, then hangs on to win, 8-6. Center fielder Joe Carter
and
catcher Benito Santiago each drive in two runs with singles in the eighth
inning. Second baseman Roberto Alomar goes two for four, with two runs,
one
home run, and three RBI. Left fielder Fred Lynn also homers for the
Padres.
Starter Dennis Rasmussen lasts five innings, giving up one run, six hits,
and no walks while striking out four. Calvin Schiraldi (1-0) picks up the
win by pitching 1-2/3 innings, giving up two runs, and Craig Lefferts gets
his second save of the season by getting the final out of the game.
Dodger starter Ramon Martinez also pitches five innings, but it is
reliever
Don Aase (0-1) who is tagged with the loss after facing four Padres,
retiring none, and being charged with four runs allowed in the eighth
inning. First baseman Eddie Murray is Los Angeles's batting star, with
two
hits, including a home run.
