Padres 4, Dodgers 3 (11 innings)
Pinch hitting for reliever Craig Lefferts Bruce Bochy homers to lead off
the
bottom of the 11th inning and send the Padres past Los Angeles, 4-3. The
Padres had already tied the game in the bottom of the 10th inning on a
pinch
hit single by John Kruk that scored right fielder Tony Gwynn. The game
also
featured a solo home run by first baseman Steve Garvey and doubles by
catcher Terry Kennedy, left fielder Kevin McReynolds, and second baseman
Tim
Flannery.
Interesting note: Carmelo Martinez played third base for the Padres in the
top of the 11th inning. but had no fielding chances.
Starter Mark Thurmond throws 6-2/3 innings, allowing six hits and two
runs.
Lefferts (1-0) picks up the win by pitching the 10th and 11th innings.
Dodger starter Bob Welch lasts 9-2/3 innings, but it is reliever Ed Vande
Berg (0-1) who is tagged with the loss after giving up the homer to Bochy.
Shortstop Mariano Duncan leads the Los Angeles offense, going two for five
with a home run and two RBI.
