Padres 5, Cardinals 1
Center fielder Derek Bell leads the way with two home runs and four RBI as
the Padres beat St. Louis, 5-1. Bell's first homer comes with two on in
the
bottom of the first inning. Right fielder Tony Gwynn chips in two singles
and one run for San Diego.
Starter Andy Benes (2-1) picks up the win by pitching eight innings,
allowing four hits, one run, and three walks, while striking out five.
Roger Mason pitches a scoreless ninth inning for the Padres.
No Cardinal has more than one hit; Mark Whiten has a triple and scores St.
Louis's only run. Starter Dave Magrane (0-1) takes the loss, pitching
seven
innings and giving up all five Padre runs.

NOTE: On this day in 2000, left fielder Al Martin sets the Padre record
for
most runs scored in a game--five. Martin also has four hits, a home run,
and two RBI in San Diego's 13-3 win over Houston. He goes on to finish
his
career with Seattle and Tampa Bay.
