You can trade minor league talent if you have solid drafting and
scouting in place. Knowing that young talent traded for batting help
will be replenished in future drafts should make this an easier
decision. I have heard Padres management say "we don't want to trade
away our future". You won't if you scout and draft well every year.
Solid drafts also mean depth at given postions your minor league
system. This can possibly give a team some leverage in negotiations
with future draftees, whereas a lack of depth at a given position, or
positions, gives the negotiating edge to the draftee. There is is so
much value to stockpiling young talent. You can make trades for help
needed now. If you don't like what is available on the trade block,
hang on to your young talent. What I don't want to hear is "we don't
want trade away our future". Not after we built the Padres a ballpark,
buying into the line "we need it to be more competitive".
