Who was worse the offense or the defense? I say the blame is
basically equal in this game. The expectation/average performance is
about 4.5 runs (except Petco where it might be 4.0). So the offense
scored 4.5 fewer runs than expected and the defense (mostly Maddux)
gave up 4.5 runs more than expected.
I'm willing to bet that Connor Jackson had more total bases against
Maddux (11) in a game than anyone ever has. Plus the 4 hits has to at
least tie a record. Kudos to him for going for that triple when he
could have settled for the double and gotten the cycle.
I watched the DBacks version of the broadcast (that way I get to hear
different stories) and it was embarassing how much they were praising
Maddux for taking one for the team. I was amazed he pitched the 7th
inning but really when you give up 9 runs there is only so much praise
you should give a guy. It was Mark Grace (former teammate) and Darren
Sutton (who surely watched Maddux in ATL a lot when his dad was
broadcasting there).
Hopefully he did not throw so many pitches that it hurts him next time
out. In the last 6 1/2 years he has only thrown this many pitches
once and that was 70 odd starts ago.
