Catcher Carlos Hernandez and shortstop Geoff Blum each have two hits, one
rune, and two RBI to lead San Diego past San Francisco, 5-2. Blum also
has
a double, and Hernandez has a triple. Left fielder Ryan Klesko scores two
runs for the Padres. Starting pitcher Brian Lawrence (1-2) pitches eight
strong innings, giving up two runs, six hits, no walks, and striking out
two. Reliever Trevor Hoffman picks up his second save of the season,
pitching a three-up, three-down ninth inning.
San Francisco is led by shortstop Omar Vizquel, who goes two for four with
a
triple and one run scored. Starter Jerome Williams (0-1) lasts four
innings, giving up six hits and four runs.

NOTE: On this day in 1982, the Padres set a team record for hits in a
game--24, including 18 singles, five doubles, and one home run. Catcher
Terry Kennedyleads the way with four hits, including three doubles, in the
13-6 win over San Francisco at Jack Murphy Stadium. San Diego would tie
this record on August 12, 2003 in a 14-4 win over the Braves in Atlanta.
