Part of that praise that Maddux got was undoubtedly due to the fact that
the
team was just coming off that 22-inning marathon. The bullpen was depleted
and tired, and if they had gone to the relief corps earlier, it would have
probably done far more damage over the long haul. By toughing it out in
what
was by then a lost cause, he was at least able to give most of the bullpen
a
much needed rest. Maddux is enough of a "pro" that he knows you have to do
that sometimes... a young player could easily have his confidence
shattered
by staying out there and getting shelled for a couple more innings. I'll
bet
that by his next start, Maddog will be none the worse for wear and
probably
return to his solid self.
