Today in Padre History
April 23, 1972
Padres 2, Dodgers 1
Second baseman Derrel Thomas drives in pinch runner Don Mason with a
sacrifice fly in the top of the eight inning to lift San Diego past Los
Angeles, 2-1. Mason was running for catcher Bob Barton, who had led off
the
inning with a single. Third baseman Dave Campbell has the other RBI for
the
Padres, while shortstop Enzo Hernandez is the only Padre with two hits.
San
Diego benefits from a complete game, six-hit effort by starter Clay Kirby
(2-0), who strikes out five and walks six.
The Dodgers' highlight is a solo home run by left fielder Willie Crawford
in
the bottom of the sixth inning. Starter Tommy John (1-1) takes the loss
despite giving up only two runs in seven innings.
