San Diego capitalizes on 5singles and a walk to score 4 runs in the top of
the 8th inning to beat Pittsburgh, 7-5. Five Padres have 2 hits apiece
(Derrel Thomas, Leron Lee, Cito Gaston, Fred Kendall, and Dave Campbell);
Lee has a solo home run and Kendall has a triple. Starting pitcher Steve
Arlin allows 7 hits and 5 runs in 6 innings, but it is Rich Troedson (1-0)
who picks up the win by pitching a scoreless 7th inning. Vicente Romo
gets
his second save of the season, allowing one hit and striking out 2 in 2
innings pitched.
Third baseman Richie Hebner (2 hits, one run, 1 RBI), shortstop Gene Alley
(3 hits, 2 RBI), and left fielder Willie Stargell (solo homerun) lead the
Pirate attack. Starter Bob Moose (2-1) pitches effectively (9 strikeouts)
through 7 innings, but runs out of gas in the 8th to take the loss.
