Left fielder Jerry Turner leads the Padres past Chicago, 6-2, with a
single,
triple, and 2 RBI. Right fielder Dave Winfield and third baseman Doug
Rader
each score two runs, and shortstop Hector Torres drives in two runs.
Starter Bill Greif (1-1) pitches the minimum 5 innings for the win, and
reliever Butch Metzger gets his second save by throwing 2-1/3 scorelees
innings. Metzger goes on to win the National League Rookie of the Year
Award, but pitches only two more years in the major leagues.
Starting pitcher Rick Reuschel (0-1) takes the loss for Chicago, pitching
6
innings before being relieved by his older brother, Paul, who pitches 2
innings. The Cubs only manage 5 hits in the game, including two each by
Rick Monday and Manny Trillo.
