Yep, that was a sweet (and much needed!) win.
What made it all the more fun was that I had traded in my second ticket
for
another game, and the guy who bought it today (I was surprised a ticket
that
good was still available day of game) was here from Las Vegas visiting his
daughter's family. He'd been a Padre fan since 1983 (an Angelino who
started
following them when Garvey signed here) and has been a fan ever since...
he
religiously follows them on Cox Cable, which carries Channel 4 in Las
Vegas,
and while he was in town, decided on a whim to go to a ballgame... his
first
trip to the new ballpark.
He's a serious sports junkie, and we carried on some fascinating
conversations about the game and baseball in general as the game went on.
He
might have been a bit of a lucky charm today, too... he said after coming
all this way to see a game, the Padres were going to win. And very early
in
the game, he tossed out a few predictions, and all three came to pass...
He said he thought Giles was going to homer over the AM/PM sign in RF.
He predicted an 8-7 final score.
And he predicted extra innings (that may have been wishful thinking, since
it was a gorgeous day for baseball and he couldn't think of any place he'd
rather spend the time than right there watching as much baseball as he
could
get).
.... these were all made before the 2nd inning...
Having enjoyed his company during the game, and not one to take potential
lucky charms lightly, I gave him my phone number and told him that if he
was
ever in town visiting his daughter again and was interested in a game, to
give me a call and if my 2nd ticket was unspoken for, it was his. :o)
